Skiers Warned About Hit and Run Penalties

Now that the ski season is in full swing, skiers and snowboarders are reminded that reckless skiing or snowboarding is against the law in Park City, as well as Summit and Salt Lake counties. Together, they encompass Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, Canyons Resort, Solitude, Brighton, Snowbird and Alta.

Collisions often happen on Utah’s mountains, but according to Park City, Salt Lake and Summit county ordinances, skiers and snowboarders who are involved in accidents must remain at the scene and make sure that if they have caused an accident, those who are injured should receive proper care.

Depending on the accident, a person who is skiing recklessly and injures another could be charged with up to a class B misdemeanor, which carries a maximum six month jail sentence and $1,000 fine.

The ski resorts themselves say that the safety of the skiers is their number one priority and urged skiers and snowboarder to follow the Skiers’ Responsibility Code, which states they should ski or ride under control, be aware of their surroundings and show courtesy to others on the slopes.

Crossing the Street Safely: Lessons for Kids

Crossing the street is something that adults take for granted but it is a skill that needs to be taught to children and at a reasonably young age. Crossing the street can make children a bit apprehensive and it is the responsibility of a parent or guardian to show kids that it is something that must be done with care and caution but that does not need to be feared. Properly and effectively teaching kids how to cross the street is not difficult but it does need to be demonstrated as much as explained. One of the best ways to do that is to take children out and impart these four steps to them.

Stop – Always stop on the curb or the grass and never on the street itself.

Look – Look both ways and make sure that all lanes of traffic are visible from where you’re standing.

Listen – Carefully listen for vehicles that may not be in the immediate line of sight.

Think – Before stepping out to cross the street, ask yourself “is it safe to cross now?”

These are steps that are simple to teach through demonstration and explanation and that kids can learn quickly and easily. Parents should always hold a child’s hand when teaching them to cross the street if they are under the age of ten. Following these steps will make for a lifetime of safe street crossing.

Two Dead in Rollover Crash

Uintah County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of 6000 North and Dry Fork Canyon Road on a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash.

It appears that the vehicle was travelling south on Dry Fork Canyon Road at a very fast speed, the driver lost control and then drove off the west side of the roadway and up a dirt hill where it rolled several times and both driver and passenger were ejected.

Police identified one of the occupants as 21-year-old Trevor Cuch of Vernal and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second occupant was a 15 year old from Vernal. He was transported to Ashley Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

It appears that the victims had borrowed the vehicle from a friend who lives in the area. He  was eventually located after he called dispatch officials to report his friends were overdue in his vehicle.

Officials said that there was no evidence of alcohol playing a part in the crash but they did not know which of the two victims was driving when the accident occurred.

Sea-Tac Airport Jetway Collapse Shows How Quickly Accidents Happen

A recent accident at the Sea-Tac Airport involving the collapse of the jet way shows just how quickly accidents can happen. Though no one was hurt in the incident, a plane was damaged as a result of the collapse. According to authorities, the bridge dropped several feet as passengers exited a Southwest Airlines flight at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport. The drop has been described as a mechanical failure.

This accident shows just how quickly things can go wrong in our increasingly complex world. We recommend that Sandy residents always remain vigilant while traveling on area roads and byways, and in their everyday lives. Here we present a video on how to remain safe in your home. We hope that the video helps you to improve your overall safety situation for you and your family.
