General Motors Report Leads to Firing of 15 Officials

The much awaited General Motors report detailing the company’s failings with relation to its automobile recall program has been released. Among the findings of the report were that the company’s CEO, Mary Barra, and her top lieutenants, were not culpable for the breakdowns which led to the recall fiasco, and that company had failed on several levels to act responsibly.

Tellingly, the company’s chief executive officer said that her engineers believed the problems, which led to cars losing power while under operation and losing power to their airbag systems, was thought by her engineers to be an issue of owner satisfaction as opposed to a technical manufacturing issue. Still, Barra claims that she does not know how such a critical mistake could be made by senior engineers.

As a result of the report General Motors fired 15 employees, several which held senior positions. But, with Barra claiming that she does not know how such a fatal miscalculation could be made by the company in the first place, one wonders what kinds of policies she will to put in place be in order to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.

Barra did also promise that the company would compensate “everyone who has lost a loved one or suffered a serious injury”. However she failed to provide details about how such compensation would be determined or disbursed.
