Thanksgiving Pedestrian Death Leads to Significant Road Improvements

Salt Lake County has announced that it will invest eight million dollars toward road safety projects this summer. The investments are meant to help prevent fatal automobile accidents, including those in which pedestrians are struck by vehicles. The investment was spurred by the Thanksgiving death of Linda Olson, who was exercising at 3300 South, and was struck by a truck in a crosswalk at 2940 East.

In the aftermath of the accident Office of Townships Executive Director Patrick Leary contacted the Utah Department of Transportation in order to expedite funding for a traffic signal in the area. The efforts succeeded, and as a result local officials decided to use the eight million dollars, which was provided by the legislature through HB377, to meet similar important infrastructure needs. The money will be used in all six unincorporated-area townships.

The funds will be used for various expenditures including constructing an overpass at 8400 West at 3680 South, to building sidewalks and improving bike safety Lanes.
